Nose

Many people develop chronic sinusitis and rhinosinusitis each year, making them some of the most common health complaints. Care of the nasal cavity and sinuses is one of the primary skills of otolaryngologists. Management of the nasal area includes allergies and sense of smell. Breathing through, and the appearance of , the nose are also part of otolaryngologists` expertise. Post nasal drip due to chronic sinusitis can be treated under the care of an ENT doctor. Some of the headaches are also related to sinus issues.

Sinusitis and Sinus Surgery (FESS, functional endoscopic sinus surgery)

Minimal invasive endoscopic sinus surgery is an operation in which the surgeon examines the interior of the nose and the openings to the paranasal sinuses. Using state of the art video-assisted endoscopy and instruments, abnormal and obstructive tissue are removed. In most cases we can perfom surgery entirely through the nostrils, without external scars. There is only little swelling and mild discomfort.

Whereas, in the past, attention has often been directed towards the removal of all sinus mucosa, the modern endoscopic approach relies on the principle that sinus disease improves significantly if the underlying blockage is identified and corrected. So we established a comprehensive diagnostic workup consisting of endoscopic examination, CT scan of nasal sinuses, lab tests, allergy testings and examination of the nasal physiology. We usually recommend sinus surgery if medical therapy has failed.

What to Expect After Sinus Surgery?

Many studies have demonstrated that the vast majority of patients who undergo endoscopic sinus surgery are ultimately very satisfied with their results. As with all surgeries there is a convalescent period after this procedure, although it is usually much milder now than in years past with the advent of endoscopes. This recovery period can vary greatly depending on the extent of surgery and the individual patient (J.M. Dutton, Medical Center Chicago).

Endoscopic sinus surgery is a relatively new procedure designed to increase the amount of air flowing through the sinuses and allow mucus to drain properly out of the nose. The procedure can:

  • Relieve nasal blockages
  • Relieve facial pain
  • Improve breathing
  • Improve the sense of smell and taste
